Because “new” doesn’t come from systems trained on what already exists

Dare you go against the advice being spit out of AI…

Wild, right?

Somewhere along the way, we all started looking for an “adult” to take us to the next level of our business. Someone to tell us what to do, what’s working, what’s next. And now, AI has stepped into that role.

It makes sense. AI is fast. It’s confident. It gives you answers in seconds that feel grounded, structured, and smart. Unfortunately, the most rewarding outcomes in business rarely come from being told what to do. They come from play.

From intentionally messing things up. From rearranging pieces in a way no one gave you permission to try. From following something that feels slightly off, slightly uncomfortable, slightly unclear. That’s where new lives.

And yet, most of us hesitate to play as adults. We’ve hit enough walls. We’ve tripped enough times. We’ve collected enough scars to know what works and what doesn’t. Those experiences made us sharper, more strategic, more aware. They also made us careful. Too careful.

So instead of exploring, we start searching. We look outward for the answer. We open another tab. We ask another tool. We refine the prompt. We try to get closer to something “new.”

But when you ask something trained on patterns, trends, and similarities to give you something different, you’re setting yourself up for a very specific kind of result. One that feels “in line,” but far from remarkable. No breakthrough, just maybe passable.

It’s almost funny when you step back and look at it. We’re asking systems built to predict behavior to help us break it.

If you actually want something new, something that shifts the trajectory of your business, you don’t find it out there. You find it by going inward. By trusting the instinct that doesn’t fully make sense yet. By following the thread that feels a little irrational. By letting yourself play again, not recklessly, but intentionally.

Because play isn’t chaos. It’s exploration with awareness. It’s testing boundaries, which in turn creates space for something unexpected to surface.

This is where the real work begins.

I feel like while I’m writing this, I’m stepping back into my student days at RISD, when we were directed to simply “play.”

This is also why working with a brand strategist matters more than ever. Not because we have better answers than AI, but because we’re not here to replace your thinking. We’re here to dial it in. To listen for the thing you keep circling but haven’t fully named. To catch the patterns that are uniquely yours, not the ones pulled from a dataset.

A good strategist doesn’t hand you a formula. They help you build a framework around what your inner voice has been trying to say all along so it can actually move. So it can become something clear, actionable, and powerful.

Because at the end of the day, you are the most unique variable in your business. Not the tools you use. Not the trends you follow. Not the answers you’re given.

And if you want to break through your next ceiling, you won’t get there by asking for permission.

You’ll get there by playing your way into it.
