Founded in New England and deeply informed by regional ecology, Design Outside came to Studio Quiche as a young and ambitious landscape architecture firm ready to define its own identity.
With a growing team and a portfolio gaining momentum, the firm needed a brand system that could evolve alongside the practice. One capable of adapting season to season and project to project, without losing coherence or intent.
The competitive landscape presented an additional challenge. Many firms in the category relied on a familiar visual language dominated by muted greens, minimalist sans-serif typography, and polished neutrality. While appropriate, the sameness made it difficult for emerging studios to establish distinction.
Design Outside needed a brand that reflected its rigor and sensitivity while clearly setting it apart.

The strategic opportunity was to move beyond expected visual cues without losing grounding or credibility.
Rather than defaulting to foliage tones or overt natural symbolism, we looked to how people actually experience landscapes. Light breaking through trees. Open sky. Reflections on water. Moments of contrast that guide the eye and shape memory.
From that insight, we developed a color palette built around atmospheric elements. Yellows, blues, and soft neutrals introduced clarity and openness into a category defined by restraint. The result was a visual language that felt fresh without feeling forced.
Typography played a complementary role. The system draws from traditional English letterforms, reinforcing the thoughtful, research-driven approach that co-founders Dennis and Tim bring to their work. The type choices signal intellect and discipline rather than decoration.
Throughout the process, the goal was balance. Intellect and craft. Structure and openness. Precision and growth.
